Forces Children’s Trust – Trustee Recruitment Framework
About the Forces Children’s Trust
The Forces Children’s Trust (FCT) exists to support children and young people whose parent or guardian
has died or sustained life-changing injuries while serving in the British Armed Forces. Our work is rooted
in compassion, respect, and long-term commitment to the wellbeing of bereaved and vulnerable children.
As we continue to grow and respond to the evolving needs of the families we support, we are seeking new trustees who can bring fresh perspectives, lived experience, and strategic insight to help guide our work.
What We’re Looking For in a Trustee
We welcome applications from individuals who are passionate about our mission and committed to supporting Armed Forces families. In particular, we are looking for trustees who bring a combination of
the following:
- Shared Values
Our trustees should be:
> Deeply aligned with our mission to support bereaved and vulnerable children from
Armed Forces families.
> Compassionate, respectful, and empathetic.
> Committed to inclusive, child-focused decision-making.
. - Lived or Professional Experience
We encourage interest from people with one or more of the following:
> Lived experience of growing up in an Armed Forces family.
> Bereavement support, safeguarding, or trauma-informed work with children and
young people.
> Service or affiliation with the military community—serving personnel, veterans, or military family members.
. - Skills and Expertise
We are particularly seeking individuals with experience in the following areas:
> Fundraising, income generation, and partnerships
> Charity finance or accountancy
> Legal and governance
> Safeguarding and child protection
> Communications and media
> Education and youth work
> Digital strategy or IT
> Diversity, equity and inclusion
You don’t need to have trustee experience to apply—we will support new trustees with a full induction
and training as needed.
Our Commitment to Diversity
The Forces Children’s Trust is actively seeking to broaden the diversity of our Board. We strongly
encourage applications from underrepresented groups, including people from Black, Asian and ethnic
minority communities, LGBTQ+ individuals, people with disabilities, and younger trustees (aged 18–30).
Time Commitment
> Trustees are expected to attend quarterly board meetings (remote or in-person).
> There may be additional commitments, such as subcommittees or supporting
fundraising and events, depending on your interest and availability.
> The role is voluntary, but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.
